What you like, is not always what you get. MediAvatar is a comercial business and develops software to sell it at a profit.
Open Office users are non paying users. MediAvatar does not make software for free and Open Office users are not likely to pay for additional software.
Your wish has to be adressed to the open office community not to MediAvatar.

If Open Office can save to a ppt format (so you can view with the free powerpoint viewer from MS), you should still be able to convert the file. If you can't save to the ppt format, that's an Open Office compatibility issue.

Though Open Office can save as ppt, the software to convert to video needs Powerpoint to do this conversion. The conversion software doesn't speak Open Office to be able to use it.
This has nothing to do with that very ppt-file, but all with Power Poiint as a part of the conversion-engine.
The makers of this conversion tool only address PowerPoint for commercial reasons and don't want to use Open Office. The Open Office commuinty could make software like this if they want to.

Remember the PowerPoint-viewer is only the viewing part of the PowerPoint full package. It is installed to make you independent from an exepensive PowerPoint installation. The viewer brings all that is needed for the converter to be able to do it's work. You can play and record to avi.
So yes, like Brian Wilson stated, you can view ppt-files generated with Open Office, but not because of the ppt-file but because of the ppt-viewer playing the ppt-file.
